JOUR-110  Introduction to Reporting and Newswriting  

3 Units (LEC 48-54)

This course is an introduction to gathering, synthesizing, organizing, and writing news in journalistic style across multiple platforms. This course will provide an introduction to Associated Press Style and will cover the role of a journalist and the legal and ethical issues associated with journalism. Students will compose media using journalistic writing standards.

JOUR-111  Introduction to Mass Communication  

3 Units (LEC 48-54)

This course provides a survey of mass communication and explores the relationships between media, people, and society. The course covers media history, structure, and trends in books, newspapers, magazines, radio, television, recorded music, film, home video, and the Internet. Students will research mediums, apply theories, and analyze media effects within the context of economics, technology, law, ethics, and social issues. *Cross-listed as COMM-111.

JOUR-130  Journalism Practicum  

3 Units (ACT 96-108)

This course teaches students to produce content for the MSJC student newspaper online, on social media, and in print. In this course, students gather news about Mt. San Jacinto College for stories, photos, videos, blogs, artwork, tweets, postings, informational graphics, and other products under deadline pressures. The course involves field work on campus to cover news about Mt. San Jacinto College.

JOUR-131  Intermediate Journalism Practicum  

3 Units (ACT 96-108)

This course teaches students to produce intermediate content for the MSJC student newspaper online, on social media, and/or in print. In this course, students gather news about Mt. San Jacinto College for stories, photos, videos, blogs, artwork, tweets, postings, informational graphics, and other products under deadline pressures. The course involves an editing and leadership component that will build on the skills learned in the Journalism 130 course.

Prerequisite: JOUR-130 (with a grade of C or better).

JOUR-150  Public Relations  

3 Units (LEC 48-54)

This course is an introduction to the principles, history and development, and practice of Public Relations. It examines the origins and evolution of the role of the PR practitioner. Students will learn to identify trends and use research and respond ethically to the many challenges facing organizations today. Planning, strategic management, choice of media tactics, and types of campaigns are scrutinized and analyzed as are crisis communication and credibility. *Cross-listed as COMM-150.
