CORR-101  Introduction to Correctional Science  

3 Units (LEC 48-54)

This course provides an overview of the history and trends of corrections. It focuses on the basic legal issues, statutory laws, and general operations in correctional institutions. The relationship between corrections and other components of the Criminal Justice System are examined as well as employment opportunities and entry requirements in the field of corrections.

CORR-502  Control and Supervision in Corrections (formerly CORR-102)  

3 Units (LEC 48-54)

This course provides an overview of the methods, practices, and theory related to custodial supervision of incarcerated persons in Federal, State, and local correctional facilities. The course examines and considers the issues of custodial control and the interaction between the offender and the correctional employee. Other topics include the effects of violence, overcrowding, gangs, and substance abuse within the correctional system. (formerly CORR 102)

CORR-503  Correctional Interviewing and Counseling (formerly CORR-103)  

3 Units (LEC 48-54)

This course offers the fundamentals of interviewing and counseling in the correctional science field. This course provides the formula for both informal and structured interview techniques in order to maximize the opportunity for investigations, information, and intelligence gathering. (formerly CORR 103)

CORR-504  Legal Aspects of Corrections (formerly CORR-104)  

3 Units (LEC 48-54)

This course provides students with an awareness of the historical framework, concepts, and case law that direct correctional science practice. The course material gives the student a perspective of the correctional environment in relation to security issues, search and seizure, plea-bargaining, prisoner religious issues, as well as the responsibilities and liabilities of correctional staff. (formerly CORR 104)

CORR-710  Basic Corrections Academy  

7 Units (LAB 216-243, LEC 40-45)

This course provides thorough understanding of correctional policy and procedure. The course will prepare students for a career in Corrections, either in a County jail facility, Private prison, or Return to Custody Community Corrections Facility. It does not serve as a precursor for employment at either the federal or state levels.

Prerequisite: Interview with Academy instructor.
