English As a Second Language (ESL)

This course offers training in English language skills needed for success in American colleges. Informed by the language acquisition process, the course includes further instruction in reading and writing. Sentence structure and grammar concepts to enhance communication are reviewed as needed. Conventions of conversation and class discussion are practiced. The course includes paragraph development, critical reading, and critical thinking skills. This course provides practice in writing American English multi-paragraph essays. The course also includes in-class practice with college-level reading and discussion in English. Critical thinking is practiced when using concepts and aspects of the readings in student compositions. With focus on elements of difficulty in the language acquisition process, grammar and sentence structure are addressed as needed. This course also addresses plagiarism and introduces the use of quotations and citations in research papers. Cross-listed as ESL-998. (formerly ESL 098W)
