General Education
MSJC offers three General Education patterns for students to work off of. Students are encouraged to meet with a Counselor to ensure they are following the proper general education option based on their educational goal.
Non-Transfer General Education
Option A: Is required for students who are interested in completing an Associates Degree from MSJC, for non-transfer. Students following this pattern must satisfy all General Education, AREAS A-H by successfully completing a course in that AREA or meeting the competency. In addition to completing Option A, students are also required to complete major requirements for their program of student. In order to successfully meet the requirements for an Associates Degree for non-transfer, students must complete at least 60 degree-applicable semester units with a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.
Basic Skills Competency Requirements for Graduation-Option A
Reading
Collegiate-level reading competency may be demonstrated by passing ENGL-101 College Composition or ENGL-101H Honors College Composition with a “C” grade or better or with an equivalent AP score or equivalent course work.
Mathematics
May be demonstrated by (1) Passed a high school math course at or above the level of Algebra 2 with a grade of "C" or better (per AB-1705); (2) Completed Intermediate Algebra or any other math course at a higher level with a grade of “C” or better; (3) Received a passing score on CLEP, AP, or IB Exams for a math course; (4) Received a passing score on credit by examination for Intermediate Algebra or higher.
Transfer General Education
Option B: Also referred to as CSUGE is required for students interested in transferring to California State Universities (CSU). Students following this pattern must satisfy all General Education, AREAS A-F by successfully completing a course in that AREA or meeting the general education competency through external exams. A minimum of 2.0 (“C” average) or higher-Grade Point Average (GPA) is required, please check university catalogs for GPA requirements. AREAS “A1, A2, A3” and “B4” (CSU Golden Four) require a minimum of “C” grade and must be completed prior to applying to the CSU. If a student completed a Golden Four course at a CSU where a C- grade is acceptable to certify a Golden Four area, MSJC will honor the C- grade if taken at a CSU, per CSU EO 1100. In addition to completing Option B, students are also required to complete major requirements for their program of student to work towards an Associates Degree. In order to successfully meet the requirements for an Associates Degree, students must complete at least 60 transferable semester units with a minimum overall GPA of 2.0. Some private schools accept MSJC's Option B as meeting their admission and general education requirements, please meet with a Counselor to verify.
Option C: Also referred to as IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) is required for students interested in transferring to California State Universities (CSU), Universities of California (UC), Out-of-State, and Private schools. Students following this pattern must satisfy all General Education, AREAS 1-7 by successfully completing a course in that AREA or meeting the general education competency through external exams. Students must complete ALL AREAS of IGETC with a grade 'C' or better in order to meet admission requirements for UC. In addition to completing Option C, students are also required to complete major requirements for their program of student to work towards an Associates Degree. In order to successfully meet the requirements for an Associates Degree for transfer, students must complete at least 60 transferable semester units with a minimum overall GPA of 2.4.
